Send a CERN e-card

This video is available on YouTube.

The 2025/2026 CERN greeting card, with the theme “Beyond the horizon”, is based on a real photograph of Geneva, including the lights of the CERN Laboratory. It was taken from the top of the Reculet (1717 m), the second-highest peak in the Jura mountains, on 1 April 2025 between 3.45 and 4.35 a.m. by photographer Aude Nowak. The coordinates 46.233497, 6.055260 represent CERN’s address: Esplanade des Particules 1, 1217 Geneva.

You can create your own personalised electronic cards by signing in with your CERN account on this site.

You can choose from three background designs, as seen in the slideshow below.

CERN social media guidelines now updated

Wed, 26/11/2025 - 12:38
CERN social media guidelines now updated

Social media are widely used today in science communication and outreach and to engage with communities around the world. Information about CERN – both accurate and inaccurate – can travel the globe in seconds. To support everyone who uses social media to talk about their work at (or related to) CERN in this shifting digital landscape, we have updated the CERN Social Media Guidelines. They apply to all CERN contributors: staff members, graduates, associates, apprentices, users, students and contractors.

With a strong foundation in CERN’s values, Code of Conduct, Computing Rules and Staff Rules and Regulations, the new guidelines offer clear advice on how to share personal and professional information responsibly, safeguard CERN’s reputation, ensure users’ own digital safety and contribute positively to online discussions. They encourage users to:

  • Protect CERN’s e-reputation by following the Code of Conduct, Computing Rules and Data Privacy Protection Policy;
  • Respect confidentiality and data privacy principles;
  • Be transparent and accurate, identifying personal opinions clearly and correcting mistakes promptly;
  • Make your content accessible and inclusive, avoid scientific jargon when addressing a broad audience, and ensure that information is factually correct and up to date;
  • Be cautious with external endorsements, and seek advice from the CERN Social Media team when in doubt;
  • Use generative AI tools responsibly, ensuring transparency and respect for privacy and data protection.

For departments, experiments and projects managing or wanting to manage institutional accounts, the guidelines also provide instructions on authorisation, branding, content strategy and evaluation, ensuring that CERN’s collective digital voice remains consistent and trustworthy.

We count on your support to make CERN’s online presence as open, respectful and inspiring as our Laboratory.

A note on CERN’s Twitter/X presence: while some organisations have stepped back from certain platforms, CERN continues to maintain a presence on Twitter (now X). The platform remains a space where CERN’s voice contributes meaningfully to global science communication and to addressing misinformation/disinformation.

Read the full CERN Social Media Guidelines on the Admin e-guide (CERN login required).

CERN’s new careers website is now live

Mon, 24/11/2025 - 13:51
CERN’s new careers website is now live

CERN has launched a new careers website – careers.cern – with a fresh design and an improved interface for a more intuitive user experience. The new platform reflects a more modern, candidate-centric approach to recruitment.

Among the new functionalities, the tool “Find your Path” helps candidates – especially those less familiar with CERN – to navigate directly to the jobs and programmes that best suit them.

Job vacancy filtering has also been enhanced, with a new system to make it easier to browse vacancies by field of work, experience level or profile. Potential applicants can now set up customised job alerts, helping them to stay informed about relevant opportunities. They are supported and guided throughout the application process, thanks to new information pages.

CERN Talent Community is now more visible, with tailored registration paths for different fields and areas of interest.

This new website has been developed by the CERN Human Resources department, with the support of the Finance and Administrative Processes, International Relations and Information Technology departments.

Take a look at the new careers website and video overview, and discover the many programmes and opportunities offered by CERN.

Expo photo | Voyage en noir et blanc dans le CERN d’autrefois

Wed, 12/11/2025 - 12:44
Photo exhibit | A journey through CERN’s past in black and white

CERN’s photo archives contain hundreds of thousands of images, among them hidden gems. Many of them are beautiful, while others are surprising or downright bizarre. For a long time, these photos lay forgotten in filing cabinets, stored on film or slides. Since 2014, a major digitisation project has been under way, bringing these pieces of the Laboratory’s heritage back into the light.

The idea quickly arose to put some of the photos on display for the public. This led to the creation of the photo exhibition ‘Explorers of science, past and present’. First presented at the Bains des Pâquis in Geneva in the spring of 2025, this exhibition is now on display at the Esplanade des Particules until the end of the year.

Through around forty photographs from the 1950s to the 1980s, the exhibit tells the story of CERN’s scientific and human endeavour: incredible machines, ultra-precise work and collaboration between scientists, as well as scenes of joy and whimsy, passion and humour – in short, everything that defined CERN back then and continues to do so today.

If you’d like to journey further into CERN’s history, you can explore the CERN photo archive database. You’ll see that a lot of information is still missing in the database. You can help to improve it by providing additional information or captions. Click on the “Suggest a caption” link on the right above your chosen photo.

If you have any interesting historical photographs relating to CERN, please send them to Heritage.Committee@cern.ch, observing these rules if possible:

  • Digital version with a resolution of at least 1440p;
  • With a caption in French or English that answers the questions “who, what, when, where, how”.

Thank you!

Protons and charged hadrons deposit energy most rapidly in the final millimetres before they stop. Pinpoint this “Bragg peak” on tumour cells and cancer can be eliminated while sparing healthy tissues. 100 keV/μm is enough to snap DNA’s double helix on both sides. More is overkill. Use heavy ions, and treatments can be particularly precise.

So much for Particle Therapy 101. Progress today depends on matching accelerator solutions to clinical needs. This edition’s cover is a reminder of the complexity of the biological side of the equation. At the bottom, strands of DNA unwind inside the membrane of the cell nucleus, and are copied for repair, replication and repackaging by a sea of organelles submerged in cytoplasm (above right). Mitochondria (top left) stand ready to destroy the cell if damage is detected – a key mechanism by which ionising radiation kills cancer. In this edition, a special feature lists the top five facts physicists need to know about radiobiology to work at the cutting edge of particle therapy, while a retrospective on the inspiring life of Joseph Rotblat adds historical colour.

This issue also marks the passing of Herwig Schopper and John Peoples, lab directors whose leadership shaped high-energy physics. Today, the future is being shaped once again. China has fired the starting pistol for a new generation of neutrino experiments. The Circular Electron–Positron Collider now boasts a mature design, though approval is on hold. And Europe’s ongoing strategy process has published its physics briefing book – a key resource for deciding CERN’s next flagship collider. ECFA chair Paris Sphicas has distilled hundreds of pages of insights into just four for the Courier.

Read the digital edition of this new issue on the CERN Courier website.

Help shape the future of research data management in Switzerland

Mon, 10/11/2025 - 11:10
Help shape the future of research data management in Switzerland

How do you manage your research data and code? What are your practices, tools and needs? These questions have become increasingly important amid rapid developments in AI and open science, with research data management (RDM) helping to ensure that research output is accessible, preserved and reproducible.

To help assess RDM in Switzerland, the CERN Open Science Office takes part in a biennial RDM survey. Coordinated by the EPFL Library in collaboration with 14 Swiss institutions, the survey covers 13 cantons and a broad range of research disciplines.

Your participation will help improve RDM-related services and support for managing research data and code at CERN and beyond. The survey, which is open until 19 December, takes less than 10 minutes to complete and your input can make a real difference.

If you have any questions about the survey or about research data management in general, contact the OS Office at os-office@cern.ch

18 November | Next blood donation campaign, Building 29

According to the Geneva blood barometer, blood stocks in the region remain extremely low. CERN is a key contributor, ranking 2nd as the region’s biggest blood donor after the Hôpitaux universitaires de Genève (HUG).

The last blood donation campaign spanned two days, a first in the Organization’s campaigns history. It took place on Tuesday 22 and Wednesday 23 July, and thanks to your solidarity, a total of 206 donors came to give blood, of which 72 were new donors. This resulted in 160 donations collected spanning all blood group types. Thank you all!

CERN will hold a its last blood donation session of 2025 on Tuesday 18 November, from 8.30 a.m. to 4.30 p.m. in collaboration with the HUG in Building 29.

Before coming to the Building 29 donation point, please make sure that:

  • you are in good health and have no symptoms such as fever, cough, a cold or breathing difficulties;
  • You are eligible to give blood:
    • Complete the brief online pre-donation questionnaire (in French)
    • Please consult this information sheet and this questionnaire issued by the HUG.
    • Note that only the pre-donation conversation with the nurse or doctor on the day can confirm your eligibility).
    • If returning from travel abroad or arriving from another country, perform the travelcheck on the HUG website (in French)
    • If you have recently been vaccinated against the flu or COVID, ensure 48 hours have passed since receiving the vaccination.
    • Please bring proof of ID with you on the day of the donation.

Save yourself time: pre-book your appointment with OneDoc

The possibility of pre-booking your appointment via the OneDoc platform is made available on this link. Spontaneous donors will be able to come at their convenience without an appointment, mindful that there may be some waiting time on the day.

As a thank you, the HUG will be giving each donor a 10 CHF voucher, to be used on the day of the donation in Novae’s Restaurants 1 and 2 at CERN.

Next blood donation dates for 2026:

  • Tuesday 24 and Wednesday 25 March
  • Tuesday 21 and Wednesday 22 July
  • Tuesday 17 November

We hope to see many of you at the donation point!

Give blood, save lives.

Using portable heaters at CERN

Mon, 27/10/2025 - 14:51
Using portable heaters at CERN

As temperatures drop, portable heaters can provide extra warmth in the workplace. Portable electric heaters were removed from the CERN Stores at the end of 2022 as an energy-saving measure. However, as some buildings are less well insulated than others and people’s tolerance of lower temperatures varies, many of us still use portable heaters, procured before 2022 or from outside CERN, to keep warm. Their use comes with significant safety risks, particularly relating to fire.

Portable heaters should be used as little as possible. To ensure their safe use, we ask all users to follow the guidelines below:

  • Only CE-marked heating devices shall be used. Do not use open-flame, solid fuel or liquid fuel heaters.
  • Make sure that there are no major fire risks in the same area (e.g. storage/manipulation of easily combustible solids or flammable liquids). Position the heater at least one metre away from flammable objects such as curtains, clothing and furniture.
  • Never cover a heater.
  • Follow manufacturer instructions for proper usage.
  • Avoid leaving heaters on unsupervised and make sure that they are switched off outside of working hours. Use a timer if necessary.
  • Electrical safety: overloaded cords and sockets can overheat, posing fire risks. Do not plug more than one heater into one socket and ensure that the heater’s wattage does not exceed 1800 W for a 10 A socket. If an extension cord is necessary, it must be fully unwound.

In case you smell smoke, disconnect the appliance immediately (if safe to do so) and call the CERN Fire Brigade: +41 22 76 74444

  • Emergency preparedness: know the location of the nearest fire extinguisher (within 40 metres) and familiarise yourself with the general evacuation procedures applicable to your workstation.

By following these precautions, you help to keep your environment safe. For further guidance, contact your Territorial Safety Officer (TSO). Stay warm and safe this winter!

Stay safe on hazardous winter roads: see and be seen!

As winter approaches, shorter days and bad weather mean reduced visibility for everyone on the road. Whether you're cycling, walking or driving, it’s crucial to remember the principle of "see and be seen". It isn’t just about looking out for yourself; it’s about respecting and being mindful of all road users, ensuring that everyone reaches their destination safely.

See - drivers, be alert

For those behind the wheel, winter visibility and road conditions demand extra caution. Be aware of your surroundings, particularly at junctions: look out for cyclists before pulling out. Beware of distractions, watch out for other vulnerable road users and reduce your speed to give you more time to respond to any unexpected situations on dark, wet or icy roads.

Be seen - cyclists and pedestrians, make yourselves visible

Winter often means navigating darker mornings and evenings, so making ourselves visible is key. Cyclists, make sure that your lights are bright and working properly —both front and rear lights are essential. Wearing reflective clothing or accessories makes all the difference. For pedestrians, reflective armbands or even light-coloured clothing help drivers to see you sooner, giving them more time to react.

We all use the same roads. Let’s make this winter a safe season for the entire CERN community. It’s all about respect.
